Abstract

Euphorbia fusiformis Buch.-Ham. ex D. Don is distributed in India, Bangladesh and Nepal. Different parts of this ethnomedicinal herb are used by the Indian tribal groups like Santal, Bhil, Tharu, Bhagat, etc. for curing a number of diseases such as rheumatic pain, paralysis, poor lactation, fever, wounds, liver disorders, and others. The objective of this study is to review critically the pharmacological, phytochemical and toxicity profiles of this versatile medicinal species. For this review an extensive literature search has been done in authentic web-databases like SCIHUB, Academia, ResearchGate, PubMed, Scopus, Elsevier, etc. using key words Euphorbia, Euphorbia fusiformis, Euphorbia acaulis and the connector AND was typed for the following phrases: phytochemistry, pharmacology, toxicity. Detailed study of the downloaded literatures revealed that diterpenoids, coumarins and steroids are predominant phytochemicals of this herb with potential of antimicrobial, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective and many other bioactivities. The present study stimulates the interest among scientists in this prospective medicinal herb of E. fusiformis to validate its ethnomedicinal claims by exploring the structure-bioactivity relationship of its many more chemical compunds.
